The Times Higher Education World University Rankings were released this year, grading over 1,000 universities around the world on 13 performance indicators. The University of Michigan Ann Arbor was ranked number 23 in the world, and Michigan State University was ranked 106. Number one this year was Oxford University, and the highest ranked university in America was Harvard.

Times Higher Education grades universities from 104 countries based on 13 indicators that can be grouped into five major categories. Teaching, or the learning environment, makes up 30 percent of the ranking, with research accounting for another 30 percent. Citations, used to measure how influential a university’s research is, makes up 30 percent as well. International outlook is 7.5 percent, and the final 2.5 percent of the grade comes from industry investment in a university.

The University of Michigan scored highest in citations, suggesting research done there is very influential, and lowest in industry investment and international outlook. Michigan State University had a slightly higher international outlook score than the University of Michigan, but lower scores in all other categories.
