The student-led group, ‘March for Our Lives’, held an event which took place just weeks after 19 students and two teachers were shot and killed in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Peaceful March for Our Lives demonstrations were planned in several Michigan cities, including Oxford, where four students were killed and seven others were injured in a mass shooting just six months ago.

Activists and politicians took to the podium to condemn gun violence. Speakers ranged from grandparents to young families to high school students. Attendees wore weathered T-shirts with the slogan “Moms Demand Action,” an anti-gun violence organization.

The rally featured speakers such as Detroit State Senator Stephanie Chang and U.S. Representatives  Andy Levin and Rashida Tlaib.

The Lansing State Journal reported that 500 people attended a rally in Lansing where Gov. Gretchen Whitmer spoke.

The student-led march was part of a day of protests across the state and country. On Saturday afternoon, roughly 200 people crowded along the Detroit riverfront to protest gun violence and demand legislative action on gun control.
